In Italian, la pasta madre means the mother yeast. It’s alive. It's complex. It allows the dough to rise. It can be shared infinitely. It grows constantly and changes with each new environment and caretaker. It is the mother that gives birth to the bread. You have to feed, nurture, and commit to it for it to grow and thrive. Through its cultivation and implicit power of sharing, it has the capacity to create community.
The Pasta Madre Paradigm is an online magazine launched by a collective of young women learning what it means to navigate the world as a gastronome. This is a creative space for sharing and engaging in conversations about gastronomy and food systems. The pasta madre is a metaphor for a renewed way of thinking about food that engages community collaboration through diverse expression. We use food as a lens for exploring complexities in our world.
We came together by chance. The idea was born in the classroom, where a few of us met while pursuing our master's at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy. We continue to grow, including friends and contributors who are spread far and wide across the globe. We are writers and linguists, scientists and dancers, photographers and anthropologists. Above all, we are learning what it means to be a gastronome.
The pasta madre starts with the same beginnings, but can be used to create different outcomes. We come from vastly different backgrounds, and will diverge on varied paths, but for now, this is our shared experience, our mother yeast.
Come. Sit down. Join our table.
